The Ganbina Youth Achievement Awards is an annual event celebrating the achievements of the Goulburn Valley Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in education, employment, and training.

Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people encounter stereotypes that overlook their achievements in education, employment, and training.

To highlight and celebrate their successes, we created the Ganbina Youth Achievement Awards. These awards proudly demonstrate that our community are excelling and achieving remarkable things in their educational and professional journeys.

Every year we give out dozens of awards to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth from Year 7- aged 25 in the following categories:

Award Categories

Education Achievement Awards – Recognising outstanding achievement in full-time education

  • 4 x awards for Year 7 students
  • 4 x awards for Year 8 students
  • 4 x awards for Year 9 students
  • 4 x awards for Year 10 students
  • 4 x awards for Year 11 students 
  • 4 x awards for Year 12 students

Employment Achievement Awards 

  • 4 x awards for individuals in full-time employment, including traineeships and apprenticeships

Training Achievement Awards – Recognising outstanding achievements in full-time training

  • 4 x awards for individuals in full-time training (training refers to enrolment in further education, i.e. a Certificate IV or higher or a university degree) 

Adrian Appo OAM Youth of the Year Award

  • 1 x Adrian Appo OAM Youth of the Year Awards – Ever year one Youth Achievement Award recipient is also awarded the Adrian Appo OAM Youth of the Year Award for overall highest scoring youth.

The award was created in honour of Ganbina’s founding CEO Adrian Appo OAM and acknowledges Adrian’s legacy and his contribution to Ganbina.

How the awards work

Ganbina Youth Achievement Award’s Dinner Presentation

If you win an award you will be invited to attend the Ganbina Youth Achievement Award’s Dinner. This semi-formal event is a celebration of Goulburn Valley Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.

Family and friends of the award winners are encouraged to attend.

 

Next Youth Achievement Awards period:

Nominations for the 2024 Ganbina Youth Achievement Awards will open on Monday September 30th 2024 and close on Friday, October 18th 2024.

The Ganbina Youth Achievement Awards are open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and youth from Year 7 and up to 25-years-old, who are from the Goulburn Valley and are actively engaged in fulltime education, employment or training. You do not need to be registered for any of Ganbina’s programs to win a Ganbina Youth Achievement Award.

No. You do not need to be registered for any of Ganbina’s programs to apply for an award. You need to be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, either be living in or from the Goulburn Valley and be engaged in full-time education, employment and/or training. Applications are open to youth from Year 7 and higher and no older than 25-years-old.

Yes, we encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth who are eligible for an award to nominate themselves.

The only award that you cannot nominate yourself or someone for is the Adrian Appo OAM Youth of the Year Award. This award is awarded to the highest overall scoring youth out of all the award winners for the year.
